Writing Task 1 Sample

Letter Sample #49 – Letter to the councillor about changes to regulations

GT Writing Task 1 (Letter Writing) Sample # 49

You should spend about 20 minutes on this task.

You live in an area where the local council has made some changes to regulations. You believe these changes are not good for residents.

Write a letter to the councillor. In your letter:

  • introduce yourself
  • describe the problem
  • say what you think the council should do about the situation

Write at least 150 words.

You do NOT need to write your own address.

Begin your letter as follows:

Dear Sir,

Model Answer 1:

Dear Sir,

I am writing to express my disagreement with the new park-policy introduced at the beginning of July. I am Laura Bicker, a history teacher at a local college, and I have been living in the town for over a decade. I am hoping that you would revert the changes and let us enjoy our access to the park as we always did.

I cannot agree with the changed made to the policies regarding the only park we have in our community. As per the new regulation, local inhabitants cannot arrange any social event inside the park and no one should enter the park after 7.00 pm! In reality, residents often arrange social gatherings there and this keeps our community members enjoy a strong bond. Due to the new rules, citizens who do not have a backyard at their houses would be forced to hire expensive community centres and many of them have already expressed their concerns. Moreover, the park should not be closed at 7 O’clock in the evening as people like me cannot take their children to the park before 7.00 pm.

I think a better measure would be to allocate a space in the park for us to arrange small programmes and not closing the park before 8.30 pm. Changes are meant to bring more facilities, not taking them away and I feel that the new policy has a serious flaw that needs your consideration.

Looking forward to hearing from you regarding this.

Yours sincerely,

Laura Bicker
