Model Answer:

Sports events are being screened round the clock on television in many countries. This phenomenon, however, has sparked off a heated debate as to whether it would wane children’s interest in taking up a sport. This essay will analyze the impacts of sports telecasts on youngsters followed by an opinion that numerous entertaining TV programmes usually dampen the young’s enthusiasm for physical activities while sports programme encourages them to play different sports.

Sports programmes, by and large, play a prominent role in encouraging young adults to participate in sports. When a sporting event is telecasted, the young could see their favourite athletes demonstrating extraordinary skills in a game. This, in turn, motivates them to emulate these techniques in a real sport. Apart from that, young adults could acquaint themselves with many exotic sports. Sepak Takraw, for instance, first appeared in Malaysia and Thailand and has been imported into India of late. As a result, a vast number of individuals get on this bandwagon and this game has fascinated a substantial number of young adults. Thus, this essay finds that the phenomenon encourages young people to participate in sports.

However, the reason why many critics have a firm belief about the drawbacks of sports coverage is that they do not discriminate the effects of sports coverage and other TV programmes in general. Nowadays, not only do TV producers offer viewers with sports telecasts but they also provide various types of programmes such as movies, dramas, and music so as to serve viewers’ needs. Therefore, many young people watch television in preference to physical activities. Besides, the decline in the number of athletes comes as no surprise because not all young children are enthusiastic about sports.

To conclude, it seems to me that generally, TV entertaining TV programmes whip up young people’s interest in doing sport while sport fosters sports spirits in the younger generation.
