Writing Task 1 Sample

Letter Sample #177 – You would like to stay in the hostel

GT Writing Task 1 (Letter Writing) Sample # 177

You should spend about 20 minutes on this task.

You are going to study at a college/university in a foreign country next semester. You would like to stay in the hostel offered by the college/university.

Write a letter to the college/university giving your accommodation requirements. You should outline what your room and food needs are. And ask what alternatives are available if they cannot provide what you want.

Write at least 150 words.

You do NOT need to write any addresses.

Begin your letter as follows:

Dear Sir or Madam,

Model Answer 1:

Dear Sir or Madam,

My name is George Ferro, and I will attend your university as a foreign student from the beginning of the next semester. I understand that your university will provide accommodation and food for all foreign students, so I thought that it would be wise to let you know in advance what my accommodation requirements and food needs are.

First, I would like to stay in a single room, preferably in a non-smoking zone in one of the university hostels. I would also prefer my room to have an attached bathroom and an air-conditioning system. It would be great if there is some laundry facilities within the hostel premise so that I do not have to travel far to get my laundry done. As for my diet, I am mostly used to Asian and Italian cuisines that have rice, soups, vegetables, pasta and noodles in them.

However, if my preferred accommodation and diets are not available at any of your hostels, I would not mind a single-bedroom accommodation with kitchen facilities as long as it is close to my university campus and within my budget.

I hope to hear from you soon.

Yours faithfully,

George Ferro

Sample Answer 2:

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am Elina Gomez, a foreign student from the Philippines, have recently got admitted to your university, and my classes will begin next month. I am writing to request some information about the university hostel. So, I would greatly appreciate it if you could provide me with more information on the accommodation options available and any necessary requirements for staying in the hostel.

In terms of my accommodation requirements, I would prefer a single room with a bed, a desk, a shelf and a private bathroom. It should have a proper ventilation system and natural lights. Additionally, I have specific dietary requirements and would prefer to have access to vegetarian food options.

I understand that there may be limitations to the accommodations that can be provided at the university hostel, so I would also like to inquire about any alternative options that may be available near the university campus.

I look forward to hearing from you. Thank you in advance for your time and assistance.

Yours faithfully,

Elina Gomez

Sample Answer 3:

Dear Sir or Madam,

I will be joining your prestigious college as a foreign undergraduate student next semester, and I am writing to inquire about the accommodation options available at your college. I would like to stay in the college hostel, and I think I should discuss my accommodation requirements beforehand.

Regarding the accommodation, I would prefer a single room with a desk, chair, and a comfortable bed. I would also appreciate having an en-suite bathroom with a hot water supply. As for food, I would like to have three nutritious and wholesome meals a day, with a vegetarian option for dinner. Additionally, I would prefer having access to a common kitchen to cook my own meals occasionally.

I understand that the hostel facilities may have limited availability and my requirements may not be met. If this is the case, please let me know what alternative accommodation options are available. I am willing to consider other options such as renting a private apartment or staying with a local family.

Thank you for your attention to this matter. I look forward to your reply and hope to hear from you soon.

Yours faithfully,

Emmett Clive
