Why are people so driven to receive promotions? What other factors motivate people to work hard?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

It goes without saying that promotions go hand in hand with hard work in the contemporary workplace as promotions are one of the primary motivators for hard work. The essay will first shed light on why employees are so eager to get promoted, and then expound the other reasons which spur them to work vigorously and efficiently.

A promotion proves to be utterly desirable by employees because of several factors. The most prominent one is the impact a promotion has on salary. In simple words, advancement in job causes an increase in pay and an employee who receives a promotion can enhance the standard of living consequently. Apart from it, autonomy is another key driver towards promotions. When an employee is elevated to a higher position, he or she usually is allowed to work more independently, with more authority. Higher positions also bring esteem for workers. To illustrate, a promotion accords the status of the employee which is a telltale sign of esteem from the organization.

However, promotion is not the sole reason which influences employees to work hard. For a start, recognition of accomplishment is one of the primary motivations of hard work. Put simply, employees usually crave for recognition for a task well done. Recognition, in fact, helps an employee to lucidly identify what efforts to be appreciated by the company and motivates her or him to work harder. In addition to this, goal setting is another factor to stimulate employees’ effort. That is to say, when an employee accomplishes a goal, she or he understands the objective better and can perform more efficiently.

To conclude, companies adopt various proven strategies so as to yield increased productivity. While promotion is regarded as one of the crucial factors for motivating employees to work harder, there are other vital factors which encourage them towards the same.
