Describe a famous person you are interested in.
You should say:
- who this person is
- how you know this person
- what this person does
and explain why you are interested in this famous person.
[You will have to talk about the topic for one to two minutes. You have one minute to think about what you are going to say. You can make some notes to help you if you wish.]
In my humble opinion, there are two different types of famous people: one is doing everything to seek attention for his/her personal gain while the other type is doing everything to help their fellow mankind. It is the latter type of famous person to whom I have always been drawn to. Today, I would like to talk about one of them.
Of course, such type of famous persons, doing everything for the cause of humanity, is few and far between in recent human history, but “Dr. Muhammad Yunus” would probably top their list. Yes, I am talking about the one and only “Dr. Muhammad Yunus” – the reluctant Bangladeshi hero – who happens to be the father and pioneer of a revolutionary system called “micro-credit” or “micro-finance”. It is this revolutionary system or idea that helped him win the Noble Peace Prize in the year of 2006.
By the way, the micro-credit system is a scheme of offering tiny loans to entrepreneurs who are too poor to qualify for traditional bank loans. With the help of this revolutionary micro-credit system, hundreds of millions of poor and helpless people around the world have managed to escape dire poverty.
I came to know about this world-renowned person for the first time about 15 years ago from one of my high school teachers at my high school when I was a 10th-grade student. At that time, he was proudly boasting about, right after the announcement of the noble prize for the Bangladeshi social entrepreneur, banker, economist and civil society leader, how one of his younger brothers was working as a top-notch banking official at the bank, established by Dr. Yunus.
I am interested in this person, not only because of his pioneering role in changing the lives of millions of poverty-stricken people around the world but also because of his modesty and humility after reaching the pinnacle of success. I am interested in him also because he is one of those persons who can always inspire us to dream big, no matter how “insignificant” we may be in the eyes of others.
