Some parents send their children to preschool when they are three or four years old. Other parents wait until their children are old enough for primary school before they send them to school.

Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of sending children to preschool at a young age.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Write at least 250 words.

Model Answer:

Opinions are split on the issue of preschooling children, and there are sound arguments on both sides of the case. Some parents admit their children to preschool at the age of 3 or 4, yet others wait for their toddlers to reach the age they feel ideal, which is usually when children become 6 or 7, for getting admission in elementary school. However, admitting children to preschool confers both benefits and drawbacks.

Preschool reaps various advantages to the children. To commence with, toddlers’ language proficiency is nurtured in a language-rich atmosphere. Between ages of 3 and 5, their vocabulary grows substantially, and their sentences become longer as well as more complex in preschool settings. Besides, toddlers’ cognitive skills are sharpened by engaging in a wide range of interactive activities that challenge them to observe precisely, ask questions, examine ideas, or solve problems. Most importantly, preschool is children’s first experience in a structured environment with educators and groups of children. This, in turn, provides an opportunity to learn, share, follow directions, and establish the foundation for learning that will happen in primary school.

Having said that, preschool also suffers from fundamental shortcomings. Preschool might cause some toddlers to eventually grow apathy towards school. The explanation of Lilian G. Katz, an emeritus professor of early childhood education at the University of Illinois, is a case in point. According to his explanation, “while early formal instruction may appear to show good test result at first, in the long term, in follow-up studies, such children have no advantage. On the contrary, especially in the case of boys, subjection to the early formal instruction increases their tendency to distance themselves from the goals of schools and to drop out of it, either mentally or physically”. Apart from that, many children find it difficult to adjust to the environment of preschool due to their developmental delays. Consequently, a child who is slow at physical and cognitive growth may feel alienated.

In conclusion, there are merits to both arguments. However, the advantages preschool reap outweigh its disadvantages. Therefore, so as to give children a fine start, parents should send their children to preschool.
