The great wave of economic globalization has opened up a new horizon of opportunity for human capital to conglomerate where it is best rewarded. However, the question arises as to whether rich nations ought to pave the way for skilled and knowledgeable professionals who are from developing and poor countries. In this case, I completely agree with the opinion as it gives enormous economic benefits to both parties.
Migrants prove a real boon to advanced economies. To begin with, skilled professionals increase the growth in productivity. With globalization, invention, and technological changes, many developed countries’ economy is shifting to more knowledge-intensive activities and demand for skilled workers is buoyant. Canada is a case in point. According to a survey, seven out of ten new jobs created between 2001 and 2019 in Canada were in high-skilled occupations. Which is why the country’s immigration policy aims to stimulate economic development by selecting skilled immigrants. Thus, high skilled employees are the real option to increase workforce growth, and productivity accordingly.
Likewise, skilled migrants can also be a real blessing to the economic development of underdeveloped or developing nations. In simple words, remittances are a major source of foreign currency for many developing nations and are the most tangible connection between migration and development. Tajikistan is a good example of a country that remittances amount to a significant share of GDP. Besides, high skilled workers can accumulate savings, which in turn increases their probability of setting up a business venture when they get back to their home country. Several surveys find evidence for many emerging market countries that return skilled migrants are more likely than non-migrants to start businesses.
In conclusion, both developed and developing countries can reap the benefits of high-skilled migrants. This is because the phenomenon compensates economic progress and it is expected that wealthy nations will allow more jobs in the future for experienced and competent employees who are from poor countries.
