Writing Task 1 Sample

Letter Sample #145 – Letter to the editor of the college magazine

GT Writing Task 1 (Letter Writing) Sample # 145

You should spend about 20 minutes on this task.

Your college publishes a magazine every month. Recently, a teacher, who is also the editor of the magazine, asked for students’ opinions about the magazine. You have decided to write.

Write a letter to the editor of the college magazine. In your letter,

  • introduce yourself and mention why you are writing
  • mention what you like about the magazine
  • say where the magazine can improve or the type of content it can add

Write at least 150 words.

You do NOT need to write any addresses.

Begin your letter as follows:

Dear Sir or Madam,

Model Answer:

Dear Sir or Madam,

My name is Sherry Gonzalez, and I am a final year student at our college, studying in the Department of Sociology. I am writing this letter to share a few words about what I really think about our college magazine. But, before anything else, I would like to thank you for offering us an opportunity to share our opinions about this monthly college magazine.

Now, I am not exactly a critique of anything but what I really like about your magazine is that it does not only talk about an array of issues that are somehow negatively affecting the life of regular college students like us, but also proposes solutions to them at the same time. Besides, I also like the fact that you, as a fine editor of this magazine, never forget to use beautiful magazine covers every month to express the moods of the mother nature around us.

However, having all that said, I would like to say that your magazine could do even a better job if you could pick a champion student contributor every month and announce some kind of awards in order to encourage more students to participate in your magazine. It can also include a “question-answer” section to answer some of the questions that our students want to ask regarding our college and studies.

I hope you will find my suggestions useful.

Yours faithfully,

Sherry Gonzalez
