Letter Sample #97 – You have not had hot water or heating

GT Writing Task 1 (Letter Writing) Sample # 97

You should spend about 20 minutes on this task.

You are a student at an English language school in Brighton and living in private accommodation with other flatmates. You have not had hot water or heating for some time. The landlord’s workmen have tried to fix the problem but without success.

Write a letter to the landlord.

In your letter,

  • state your reason for writing
  • describe the problems and explain how you feel
  • propose a solution and ask the landlord to take action

Write at least 150 words.

You do NOT need to write any addresses.

Begin your letter as follows:

Dear ……………,

Model Answer:

Dear Mr Antony,

Hope this letter finds you in good health and spirit. I wish that I did not have to write this letter, but I do not have any other choices left. The reason, for which I am writing this letter is that I am not getting any hot water or heating facilities in my flat for the last two weeks.

As a result, I am dealing with cold issues from the bone-chilling cold weather of Brighton. By the way, you must be aware of the fact that Brighton is at least 4 degrees colder than London during the wintertime, and as a student from a sub-tropical country, I am struggling even more because the heating facility, as well as the hot water system in our flat, is not working. Your workmen tried to fix the problem last week, but, apparently, without any success.

So, in light of this current cold problem in my flat, which I am going through now, I would highly appreciate it if you hire some more competent workmen to get the problem fixed as quickly as possible, or at least provide me with a portable heater temporarily to keep my flat warm.

Yours sincerely,

Asgar Khan
