Letter Sample #75 – You recently stayed in a hotel in a large city

GT Writing Task 1 (Letter Writing) Sample # 75

You should spend about 20 minutes on this task.

You recently stayed in a hotel in a large city. The weather was very unusual for the time of year and the heating/cooling system in the hotel was quite inadequate.

Write a letter to the manager of the hotel. In your letter:

  • give details of what was wrong
  • explain what you had to do to overcome the problem at the time
  • say what action you would like the manager to take

Write at least 150 words.

You do NOT need to write any addresses.

Begin your letter as follows:

Dear Sir or Madam,

Model Answer:

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing in connection with my recent stay at your hotel, Bayswater Inn International, from November 16th to November 18th 2018. The staff in your hotel were exceptionally welcoming and the location was extremely convenient. However, I was disappointed with the room and spent three miserable nights there.

When I arrived, the temperature dropped to a record-low and an unexpected cold wave hit the London city. I understand that the sudden temperature drop was unexpected but a three-start hotel like yours should have been prepared for it. It was utterly disappointing to be in one of your rooms where the heating system did not work. After I made several complaints, a technician came and failed to do anything. Moreover, my request to allocate me another room was turned down with the excuse that the hotel was completely booked!

Unfortunately, each night after work, I spent sleepless night despite wearing my coat, socks and other dresses. Consequently, when I returned home, I found myself catching a bad cold and I am still suffering from it.

It was shocking and unexpected for me to spend such an exorbitant amount of money and yet experience three terribly uncomfortable nights. Perhaps you would consider refunding me some money and giving me a discount if I ever come to your hotel again. Besides, fix the heating system in every room in your hotel so that other guests do not suffer the way I did.

I look forward to hearing from you soon.

Yours faithfully,

Eric Forster
