Full-time university students spend most of their time in class or working on assignments. However, some people think that it is important for students to get involved in non-academic activities on campus as well (for example, to join a sports team or take part in drama).
To what extent do you agree or disagree?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Opinions are divided on the issue of extracurricular activities like sports or acting, and there are sound arguments on both sides of the case. Many people believe that university students should exclusively devote themselves to their studies, whereas others deem that it is important to have a diverse range of activities and interests. However, I believe that involvement in extracurricular experiences is a vital part of higher education.
Those who advocate pupils focusing their efforts entirely on academic activities put emphasis on the singular learning experience. The rationale behind this attitude is that students are paying a substantial amount of money, and very often are burdened with student debt. Therefore, they should dedicate themselves solely to academic curriculums. Besides, this is the only period in life they will have to acquire expertise in a single, chosen field without bearing the pressures of work. To put it another way, investing time completely in academics and learning theories and developing skill sets will establish a firm basis of their entire professional career.
On the contrary, extracurricular experiences are also a crucial component of tertiary education. There are myriad pieces of evidence of successful professionals who joined a drama or comedy club unrelated to their course and later ended up working in that area. A very good example here is Rowan Atkinson, the actor who played “Mr. Bean”. While working towards his degree, Rowan also belonged to the Oxford University Dramatic Society. In addition to this, extracurricular activities can also stimulate academic success. Put simply, taking part in activities a student is passionate about can enhance his brain function, help him concentrate and manage his time better; all of which contribute to academic excellence. Endurance sports, for instance, can build stamina in the face of severe difficulty. This helps students achieve a competitive edge over their counterparts when it comes down to studying and taking examinations.
In conclusion, although a university provides a once in a lifetime opportunity to lay emphasis on studying, I feel it is of profound importance to have a wide range of activities and experiences. In fact, students should give priority to study but not be indifferent to other important activities.
